Obama Praises Connecticut On Gun Control; Urges Congress To Follow With National Law

Annie Coursey / youthjournalism.org U.S. President Barack Obama addresses a crowd Monday at the University of Hartford in West Hartford, Connecticut. By Kiernan Majerus-Collins Correspondent Youth Journalism International WEST HARTFORD, Connecticut, U.S.A. – President Barack Obama hasn’t had much success enacting legislation since the Republican takeover of the House of Representatives in 2011, but the frustrations of Washington wrangling have done little to weaken his strident calls for a more progressive and enlightened form of governance in America. Visiting the state for the second time since gunman Adam Lanza massacred 20 children and six educators at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Conn. on Dec. 14, the president continued his call for “common sense” gun violence prevention policies. In recent months, Obama has used his office to urge universal background checks on all gun purchases, registration of … Read entire article »

Democrats Offer A ‘Well-Rounded Vision’

By Charles Perosino Junior Reporter YouthJournalism International TOLLAND, Conn., U.S.A. – Following the Republican National Convention last week in Tampa, Florida, the Democrats this week produced a much more well-rounded vision for the country when they gathered in Charlotte, North Carolina. Whether the Republicans are trying to hide the mess they created in the last decade or simply cannot offer a plausible platform is debatable. While Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney didn’t mention our troops in Afghanistan even once, the Democrats grasped their commitment for serving those who serve us. Every single speaker at the Democratic convention told us what they thought, and never veered away from the truth. Congressman Emanuel Cleaver of Missouri wholeheartedly told us what it meant to him to be a liberal. Congressman John Lewis of Georgia told us about his past fighting for … Read entire article »

Obama’s Mideast Speech Disappoints

By Jessica Elsayed Senior Reporter Youth Journalism International ALEXANDRIA, Egypt – Though I’d prefer not to be cynical, it’s the only way I can explain some of the things that went on in the heads of the people in the Arab world recently when Barack Obama made his speech on the Middle East and North Africa. For the U.S. president to say things like, “Two leaders have stepped aside. More may follow,” can actually make an old man in a coffee shop in downtown Cairo really upset, thinking, they didn’t step aside, they were forced to. Now for some economic wisdom. “In a global economy based on knowledge and innovation, no development strategy can be based solely upon what comes out of the ground,” Obama said. As brilliant as that sounds, many will argue that without money, … Read entire article »

Thus, we all saw and heard President Barack Obama’s speech Thursday on the Middle East and its current affairs. As a Middle Eastern Arab Muslim, I was especially interested in what Obama had to say and I paid attention to his statements. Some points that he made were perfectly justified while others are … Read entire article »
