Democracy Is Slowly Coming To Malaysia
Evangeline Han Reporter Youth Journalism International MELAKA, Malaysia – The internet – with its news sites, social media and partisan blogs – is helping to spur change in government here and, I hope, will eventually bring true democracy to my country. Yesterday, Malaysians over age 21 went to the polls and elected a new government for the coming five years. As the culmination of months of campaigning – labeled by some as one of Malaysia’s dirties elections ever – … Read entire article »

Lessons From Les Miserables: Tearjerker Teaches About Grace And The Law
Official movie poster By Evangeline Han Reporter Youth Journalism International MELAKA, Malaysia – Before going to watch Les Misérables, I logged into Wikipedia to read the movie’s plot. My Facebook friends had been posting about the movie and some even mentioned the touching aspect of it. After reading the plot, I was bewildered. How could they cry while watching the movie when two of the main characters had their happy ending because of their marriage? After all, how touching could battle scenes be? Little did I know! Les Misérables starts with prisoners working on ropes to pull in a large ship in the downpour. As they file back to prison after completing their job, the prison guard, Javert, played by Russell Crowe, stops one man, Jean Valjean, played by Hugh Jackman, and tells him that he … Read entire article »

Qaddafi Doesn’t Deserve A Quick Death
By Evangeline Han Reporter Youth Journalism International MELAKA, Malaysia – I first read the news of former Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi’s capture and apparent death on Twitter. At this point, though, we can’t be 100 percent sure that he is dead. If his death is confirmed, no doubt there will be much rejoicing. While I don’t believe that we should feel glee when someone, no matter how evil, has died, it’s impossible not to think about the Libyans and how much they have suffered under the Qaddafi regime. If Qadafi is dead, his death would be a relief for his country. While he and his family lived lavish lifestyles, the Libyan people suffered. Qaddafi sucked the livelihood and opportunities from his people. Still, I don’t want to see Qaddafi dead, at least not now. He should face justice. If he … Read entire article »
