By Cresonia Hsieh Senior Reporter Youth Journalism International DELRAY BEACH, Florida, U.S.A. – Upon entering the barren classroom, anxiety runs high as students’ sharpened No. 2 pencils and calculators quiver and shake. By Cresonia Hsieh Senior Reporter Youth Journalism International DELRAY BEACH, Florida – It’s that time of the year when pumpkins are carved, candy is freely given out, toddler girls transform into Disney princesses, but most of all, it’s that time of year when innocent professions and adorable animals are adulterated. Only in America would the young “ladies” of a nation turn a favorite childhood holiday into an excuse to purchase the most promiscuous outfit from Party City that they can find. In high schools everywhere, adolescent girls adopt the concept of innocent animals – such as the mouse, bunny and kitten – and exploit it so that they can sport skimpy and provocative outfits and somehow pass it off as “cute.” Although once a quasi-family friendly holiday, Halloween has become one of the most … Read entire article »

A Decade Later: Collected Thoughts Of 9/11

Thoughts about Sept. 11, 2001 collected by Youth Journalism International students in interviews and in some cases, offered in personal essays by the YJI students themselves: There was a stiffness in the air.  It was a day without smiles.   – Kiara Christensen, American high school student living in Saudi Arabia I was in my first year at university. One of my friends often read the news from CNN so the morning after that (when the event took place, it was night in Viet Nam due to time zones), she told me about it. My very first reaction was kinda naïve. I was like, “How come?” because at that time, I believed the U.S. is a big and powerful country and it could not be attacked just like that. And you know, there was … Read entire article »
