Proposed Boy Scout Change To Include Gay Youth Must Also Include Adult Leaders

By Eli Winter  Reporter  Youth Journalism International  HOUSTON, Texas, U.S.A. – The Boy Scouts of America today announced a proposed amendment to their ban on gay Scouts. If the proposition is approved by the organization’s National Council, the Scouts will no longer deny “youth … membership … on the basis of sexual orientation or preference alone.” On the surface, this might seem a positive change. After all, children throughout the whole nation would now be able to put on … Read entire article »

New Strokes Album Rivals The Band’s Best

By Eli Winter Reporter Youth Journalism International HOUSTON, Texas, U.S.A. – The Strokes have never been known for their predictability. Comedown Machine, their new album released today, proudly reaffirms that idea. With this latest record, you hear the New York band evolving, slowly but surely, from their scruffy, apathetic threads of a decade ago to some nice, shiny, New Wave clothes from the 1980s. A quick refresher on the history of The Strokes – their debut EP started a bidding war to sign the band to a major label, which RCA Records won out. Their debut album, Is This It, released in 2001, as expected, received a huge amount of praise and many placements on best-of-the-decade lists. Their second album two years later, Room on Fire, attempted to expand their sound slightly with the incorporation … Read entire article »

Scouts Must Do Their Duty And Accept Gays

Boy Scout Oath On my honor I will do my best To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; To help other people at all times; To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight. By Eli Winter Reporter And Isaac Winter Junior Reporter Youth Journalism International HOUSTON, Texas, U.S.A. – As former Boy Scouts, we know the Scout Oath by heart, but over our six years spent in scouting, its meaning faded for us. Many other boys don’t have the choice we did whether  to put on the Boy Scout uniform – the tan Scout shirt, the muddy olive green Scout pants – or have a chance to say that Oath themselves. The Boy Scouts of America recently announced that they would review their long-standing policies – unwritten rules to some – forbidding gay boys … Read entire article »

The Best Hipster Music Of 2012. Really.

By Eli Winter Reporter YouthJournalism International HOUSTON, Texas – Here’s an overview of my favorite hipster music for 2012. Best Albums “Four”—Bloc Party  This album’s title comes from a pretty obvious fact: that it’s the fourth album made by Bloc Party. While its name isn’t terribly original, the music is, and it’s naturally – at least for the most part – extremely well done. Its songs feature a variety of opposites: urgent-sounding and relaxed guitars, begging and yelping vocals, calm and driving bass parts and the same ol’ same ol’ of good old Matt Tong’s unbelievably precise drumming. As a result, many of its songs seem opposite as well (“Real Talk” followed by “Kettling” serves as a great example of that), but Bloc Party manages to pull it all together in such a way that gets me to … Read entire article »

Wrigley Field Turns Astros Fan Into A Cubbie

Eli Winter / youthjournalism.org Chicago’s historic Wrigley Field By Eli Winter Junior Reporter Youth Journalism International CHICAGO, Illinois, U.S.A. – The feeling was one of exhilaration, anticipation, giddiness, awe, camaraderie.  I’ve only felt it once before in my life (and, being Jewish, the other time involved a bar mitzvah, and, thank God, not a bris). “What could make Eli feel this way?” you think. “Marriage? The Astros winning the World Series? Mitt Romney barely losing the upcoming Presidential election?”No, actually, a Cubs game.Just walking past Wrigley Field you get a sense of history. There are echoes of the Curse of the Billy Goat dooming the Cubs to baseball futility since 1945, of the bizarre College of Coaches used by the Cubs in 1960 (eight men – more than one opinion) and then you hear the first … Read entire article »
