A taste of Africa in the middle of Copenhagen

Baobab restaurant. (Noah Haynes/YJI)

Copenhagen, Denmark – On a recent visit to the popular street food hotspot Reffen in Copenhagen, I visited an amazing Gambian stall called Baobab selling peanut stew, African doughnuts, and fried plantains.

As I walked past, the owner immediately caught my attention. He was offering everyone a free sample of his classic Domodar stew, a peanut butter stew.

He was incredibly friendly to everyone, chatting with every customer. It was like meeting a long-lost friend.

The classic Domodar stew was tasty. The stew had peanut butter, carrots, cabbage, and sweet potatoes served on a bed of rice. They offer it with chicken as well.

As someone with not such a sweet tooth, I was initially a bit hesitant about the sweetness of it. The sweetness was there, but I didn’t find it too overpowering. If you really can’t deal with sweetness, it is not for you.

He also sold fried plantain, a starchy fruit from the banana family, which was sweet and gooey.

The African Doughnuts were full of taste. They had a hint of nutmeg, a bit like Christmas. It’s served with either a sweet sauce or a savory garlic option. I had them as a dessert, so I had the sweet sauce, which was quite sweet.

Overall, it was an incredible service experience, and the food was even better. I would go back for another visit for sure.
