Bonfire Begins An Ethiopian New Year

Ethiopians celebrated Debre Tabor, also known as Buhe, on Wednesday. It’s a Christian holiday that leads up to the New Year celebration for the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The fire, called a Damera, is made of special wood called chibo. It is lighted and people dance around it. Despite its religious roots, people of many faiths enjoy the celebration. (Dawit Leake/YJI)
