The municipality of Istanbul decorated the subways with flags and signs reminiscent of a typical Turkish elementary classroom. Some of them included social messages in the font and grammar that is used to teach first graders how to read. (Bilge Nur Güven/YJI)

I am happy to share that the national Journalism Education Association is honoring me in Philly this fall by naming me as one of four "Friends of Scholastic Journalism." As a huge fan of the late Ed Asner, it's especially delightful to me that years ago, the "Lou Grant" television show won the same award - as did the real life heroes Mary Beth Tinker, a champion of student free speech (she's from Iowa! <3) and the National Federation of Press Women.
