New Captain America film is surprisingly good

Jericho, New York, U.S.A. – As an avid Marvel fan who binged every movie during the 2020 pandemic, I had high expectations for the new Captain America release Captain America: Brave New World.

And despite going into it seeing low reviews from critics, I was pleasantly surprised.

I did enjoy this movie. It is nowhere near my favorite, but I would not rank it as low as critics are.

It’s been nearly a decade since a Captain America movie was released. For backstory, there have been three previous Captain America movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Captain America: The First Avenger; Captain America: The Winter Soldier; and Captain America: Civil War.

This movie’s main protagonist is Steve Rogers [Chris Evans] who hands over his shield to Sam Wilson [Anthony Mackie] at the end of Avengers: Endgame (2019), leading to the onset of the Disney show The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

And Steve Rogers [Chris Evans] handing the shield over to Sam Wilson [Anthony Mackie] left big shoes to fill. I watched “The Falcon and Winter Soldier” television series around two years ago.

I went into the movie almost blind, not really remembering previous storylines.

I enjoyed the portrayal of Joaquín Torres (Danny Ramírez) as the new Falcon. He fit seamlessly and brought a fresh and witty dynamic. And finally seeing Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) shine as Captain America really grew on me.

Now here are my negatives. The number of villains is overloaded and that makes it difficult to be fully invested in one conflict. The plot is just continuous but never with explicit explanation.

Everything is thrown at you and you are just expected to remember these storylines – some that started a few years ago. In combination with information presented in the show “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” some storylines get lost in translation.

What makes this movie struggle is presenting the Marvel story in combination with the Disney TV show. It adds a layer of confusion.

Despite some of the confusion, the movie is witty and definitely makes me excited for what more Marvel has to come in the years ahead.
