We are beyond proud of a wonderful YJI alum, Arooj Khalid, who is working to advance education for girls. She's featured in a new book by the Malala Fund, which is cool, and she's on the cutting edge of a much-needed worldwide effort to seek equal education for both sexes, which is even more cool.Anyway, read about her in a new story by YJI's Holly Hostettler-Davies. Here's an excerpt and link:Arooj Khalid realized that although both of her parents wanted her and her brothers to go to good schools and be good students, the expectations that they had for their daughter were different from those they had for their sons.Khalid said she was expected to have a good education and then find a good husband, whereas her brothers were expected to use their good education to secure them successful careers.This was when she first started to realize the differences in gender norms, especially when it comes to education. After visiting schools in the United States, Khalid saw how teachers teach and how the curriculums in other countries worked, making her feel a “deep sense of deprivation.”She realized that the good education she got in Pakistan was not even a good education compared to the education in other countries. “Even though I went to really good schools, I felt like something really huge had been taken away from me,” she said.Since her education, Khalid has been working to create a more gender-equal society – and a better education system for girls particularly, in Pakistan. “I wanted to do something for the students as I felt something had been taken away from me and I felt I still had a better chance of gaining it, somehow,” she said, sharing her motivations behind her work for girls education. youthjournalism.org/her-passion-for-girls-education-earned-her-a-spot-in-malalas-new-book/ ...
