How to make the most of high school, without the stress

Pekin, Illinois, U.S.A. – Before I began high school, I remember being told, “Enjoy it while you can” and “These will be the best days of your life.”

Though these phrases come from a good place, they scared me. I could not help but think: does my life “end” when I graduate? What happens next?

As someone entering their last year of university, here are some things to think about:

You do not have to like everything in school

Whether it is the quadratic formula or a classic novel you are forced to read, you may have to do things that do not spark your interest.

Take note of what you really enjoy learning and what you really hate doing.

Keeping a mental track of this will help you decide what you want to study or what kind of job you want to pursue.

Explore and try everything

When else in your life will you have the opportunity to be a part of so many clubs, sports, and classes?

Take advantage of each experience you are given. New experiences feed off of each other into new opportunities.

Talk to people

Get beyond your friend group and meet new people. Kindness goes a long way.

Say ‘yes’ more than ‘no’

You never know what you may be missing out on if you automatically restrict yourself and say “no.” However, learn your personal limits, too.

Yes, you are right on track

I see you: midnight doomscrolling on TikTok stuck in the comparison trap thinking, “If only I started my own business then I would get into my dream school.”

Comparison is a killer.  Though admirable, you do not need to create your own charity, start a business, or win an award to be successful.

You are meant to be right where you are.

Work hard, but do not forget to enjoy

You can do it all. Go to the formal dance and study for that math exam. Go to the sporting event and prepare your college applications.

Strive for balance instead of one-sidedness.

Think of everything as an opportunity

Education is a privilege. Your high school experience is your opportunity.

My own high school experience during the COVID-19 pandemic taught me that life could change in an instant. Be in the moment.

Find your why and build your curiosity

Your ideas, talents, and passions are what make you unique. It is your mission to build upon them.

I believe your high school years are not the “best days of your life.” Instead, they are your springboard for what is yet to come.

Enjoy each moment, not just the hours spent in classrooms. Be you, and do not forget to be proud of yourself.

The best is yet to come.
